Information on the distribution and relative abundance of wildlife species in the state is valuable to the Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD).  It helps us determine if a species may be in need of special attention or if we need to increase baseline inventories.  A number of species have been indentified in the
State Comprehensive Wildlife Conservation Strategy (posted on the WGFD website) as species of greatest conservation need because information about them and where they occur is lacking.  The State Comprehensive Wildlife Conservation Strategy describes what we do know and the information we need.  Wildlife observers can greatly increase our understanding Wyoming wildlife, whether you are a weekend enthusiast, an occasional visitor to the state, or a professional biologist by reporting sightings of these species.

To address this information need, WGFD is focusing on six species (2 mammals, 2 birds, and 2 herps) during the Spring/Summer and four species (2 mammals and 2 birds) during the Fall/Winter Species of the Season Challenge.  The species during the Fall and Winter of 2010 are:

Six new species will be selected for Spring and Summer 2011.  To learn more about the species and how to find them, click on the Species links above.

As encouragement, we will be presenting the number of observations individuals report with special recognition of top observers each season.
