Aquatic invasive species (AIS) are a significant threat to the natural resources of Wyoming and have the potential to cause substantial ecological, economic, and social impacts statewide. Several invasive species currently exist in Wyoming, and other potentially more damaging species are present in neighboring states.
The Wyoming Game and Fish Department has developed a draft Wyoming Aquatic Invasive Species Management Plan to develop a coherent, cohesive response to the threat posed by AIS and to coordinate efforts between federal, state, tribal, local, and private entities.
Like most of our neighboring states, Wyoming is developing an AIS management plan. The goals of the Wyoming management plan are to:
1) prevent introduction of new AIS to Wyoming and the dispersal of established AIS populations into unaffected waters,
2) eradicate or control established AIS in an environmentally sound manner to minimize the adverse effects of AIS,
3) educate the public of AIS threats and how to reduce potential impacts, and
4) support research on AIS in Wyoming.
This draft plan has been provided to other Wyoming State agencies for review and comment. After this public comment period the plan will be finalized and submitted to the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission at their September 7-8 meeting for their approval. The Governor of the State of Wyoming may submit the plan to the national Aquatic Nuisance Species Task Force in October for the purpose of seeking federal grants to implement the plan.
