     Beautiful scenery and a large wooden hatchery are the first things you will see at Story Fish Hatchery. In 1895, the legislature authorized construction of a hatchery in Sheridan County. The original hatchery was located at Wolf Creek, south of Dayton. In 1907 the hatchery was relocated to Story. A new hatchery building was completed in April 1993, which includes indoor exhibits and displays along with hatchery and rearing facilities.
     Like all other hatcheries and rearing stations, the success of hatchery operations at Story is dependent upon quality water supplied from nearby springs. Water temperatures vary throughout the year from 34 to 55 degrees F. Cold water allows hatchery personnel to "hold back" or slow the growth and development of eggs and fish. Slow fish growth and egg development allows Story Hatchery to assist other hatchery managers statewide in providing the proper size fish at the right time of year. Story Hatchery maintains two lake trout (Mackinaw) broodstocks. In addition, each year eggs from lake trout are fertilized with milt from male brook trout to produce Splake, a cross between the two species.
     Trout fishing is available on Lake DeSmet and South Piney Creek.
